Alternative health therapies
Alternative medicine is growing in popularity all over the United States as an alternative to traditional medicine. Alternative health therapies typically involve processes that hope to improve the overall health and well being of an individual without the use of prescription drugs or surgery. There are countless alternative health therapies practiced today including those discussed below: acupuncture, chiropractic, bio-feedback, and massage therapy.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a type of alternative therapy treatment that involves the use of needles being inserted into certain areas of the body. More specifically, acupuncture is defined as “stimulating specific points on the body, usually by inserting very fine needles into the skin and underlying tissues,” according to Merck’s “Types of Alternative Medicine” article (http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec25/ch302/ch302c.html ).
According to Merck, stimulating these muscles is a painless, tingling procedure that “is believed to unblock the flow of qi along energy pathways (meridians) and thus restore balance between yin and yang.”
Bio-feedback: Biofeedback is an alternative therapy treatment that uses an individual’s mind to help improve their overall health or help deal with pain. According to The Mayo Clinic, “Biofeedback is a type of complementary and alternative medicine called mind-body therapy. Using feedback from a variety of monitoring procedures and equipment, a biofeedback specialist will try to teach you to control certain involuntary body responses” (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/biofeedback/SA00083). Biofeedback may be used in conjunction with other types of modalities, including alternative massage systems. Click here to request more information on HydroMassage’s bio-feedback program.
Chiropractic: Chiropractic therapy is another alternative health therapy that involves treating the spine to relieve pain and improve overall health. The use of chiropractic therapy is growing in popularity within the United States as an alternative therapy treatment to back pain without depending on prescription drugs or surgery for relief. According to The American Chiropractic Association, “Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal”( http://www.amerchiro.org/level2_css.cfm?T1ID=13&T2ID=61). Chiropractors use several modalities in conjunction with spinal manipulation including spinal decompression, hot and cold packs, and massage therapy, to name a few. Instead of a massage therapist, several chiropractors prefer alternative massage systems (as alternatives to hands-on massage) to provide massage therapy to their patients. Massage Therapy: Massage therapy is an alternative therapy treatment that involves “the manipulation of body tissues to promote wellness and reduce pain and stress”, according to Merck’s “Types of Alternative Medicine” article (http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec25/ch302/ch302c.html). Massage therapy involves applying pressure to areas on the body. Although massage therapists do provide a form of massage, there are also alternatives to hands-on massage. HydroMassage water massage beds are one of the alternatives to hands-on massage. HydroMassage provides the benefits of massage, with the added element of heat. HydroMassage provides a full-body, deep-tissue massage and allows for each person to enjoy this alternative therapy without having to disrobe or have another person touch them.
